An overview: The United States is the most diverse economy in the world. While the United States accounts for only about 4 percent of the world’s population, its GDP is 26 percent of the world’s total economic output. It is ethnically and culturally very diverse country. The American economy is a free-market, private enterprise system that has only limited government intervention in areas such as health care, transportation, and retirement. American companies are among the most productive and competitive in the world.   • There are six time zones in the US. Except for Hawaii and parts of Arizona, most of the US observes Daylight Saving Time (DST)
